Advancing structural heart echocardiography through collaboration, innovation, and education

Dr. Tasnim Vira is a Cardiologist with a special interest in Cardiac Imaging and Cardiac Imaging education. Dr. Vira completed her medical training and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Toronto prior to completing Cardiology training at University of Calgary. Dr. Vira returned to Toronto to complete a two-year Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre/University of Toronto with a focus on transesophageal echocardiography, cardiac MRI and cardiac CT. Dr. Vira graduated from the Master Teacher program at the University of Toronto in 2015 with a special interest in Cardiac Imaging education.

Dr. Yannis Amador is a Staff Cardiovascular Anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at Kingston Health Sciences Centre and an Assistant Professor at Queen’s University. He completed a research fellowship in perioperative echocardiography under the mentorship of Dr. Feroze Mahmood at BIDMC, Harvard Medical School and completed a clinical fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesia and liver transplantation at Toronto General Hospital.

Dr. Amador is certified in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography by the NBE and is the perioperative echocardiographer for structural heart interventions at KHSC. 

Dr. Jacobo Moreno Garijo is a Staff Cardiovascular Anesthesiologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and a Clinician-Investigator in Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Toronto. Trained in Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine in Barcelona, he completed fellowships in Critical Care, Cardiovascular, and Thoracic Anesthesia at Toronto General Hospital. 

He specializes in Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FOCUS), lung ultrasound, and TEE, holds Advanced PTEeXAM certification, is a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE), and is an associate investigator at the Lynn & Arnold Irwin Advanced Perioperative Imaging Lab. He is director of the Toronto and Barcelona 3D Perioperative TEE Courses. 

Dr. Fabio de Vasconcelos Papa is a staff anesthesiologist, St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto. Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Papa graduated from the University of São Paulo where he also finished his anesthesia residency. He completed his clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Anesthesiology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Papa is a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE)

Dr. Ruiz is an echocardiography fellow at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He completed his medical school training, internal medicine residency and cardiology residency at the University of Toronto. He has a strong interest in medical education. He has taught a number of small group lectures for internal medicine residents, has developed an echocardiography boot camp for the cardiology residents and has delivered the cardiology section for the Internal Medicine Review Royal College preparation course for the last three years. He strives to help learners develop and grow while delivering excellent patient care.

Dr. Wendy Tsang is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and a Cardiologist and Clinician-Investigator at the Toronto General Hospital where she leads a Complex Valve Disease Clinic. She holds the Melanie Munk Chair in Advanced Echocardiography and is Chair of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada Area of Focused Competency subcommittee in Adult Echocardiography. She is also an Associate Editor at the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. She was a member of the writing groups for the American Society of Echocardiography 2012 3D Guidelines, the 2015 Chamber Quantification Guidelines and the 2023 Prosthetic Valve Guidelines and is Co-chairing the Update to the Chamber Quantification Guidelines. Her research focuses on valvular heart disease, 3D echocardiography, and artificial intelligence.

Douglas Wright completed training at McMaster University in Internal medicine, cardiology and echocardiography. He is an associate professor at McMaster University in the division of cardiology and the program director of the McMaster echocardiography and interventional echocardiography fellowship programs.  Clinical focus is in valvular heart disease where he is the echocardiography lead in the McMaster structural heart program.
